Case study - Mission Hills Golf Course

Lighting of the Largest Golf Club in the World

The complex includes ten Golf courses, each designed and endorsed by some of Golf’s prolific players, including Greg Norman, Ernie Els, Nick Faldo and Vijay Singh. The Mission Hills Golf Club also boasts a 230 room Hotel complex, 300,000 sq ft Country Club and privately managed residential developments all offering 5 star luxury living, and the ultimate Golf Resort.

Mission Hill’s latest development is the lighting of two more of its Golf Courses, (Duval and Sorenson), providing its guests and competitive players with the opportunity to play into the night.

Against international competition, Abacus Lighting won the contract for the floodlighting. Abacus has a long history with Mission Hills, having previously been involved with the floodlighting of the Ernie Els Course, and the Jumbo Ozaki Course.

Lighting the fairways, tees and greens throughout the two golf courses presented Abacus’ Lighting engineers with an interesting challenge, however the fact that both golf courses run in parallel with each other certainly tested the experience of the team.

To achieve the required lighting levels, the final lighting scheme involved 150 mast locations, fitted with over 400 Challenger® 1 floodlights, each fitted with double ended 2kW Metal Halide lamps. Challenger® 1 is a high performance floodlight featuring a double asymmetric beam distribution ensuring minimum upward light, tight control of overspill and minimal glare to onlookers.

John Anthony, Export Manager for Abacus Lighting, commented “Creating the lighting scheme was certainly a challenge, but our rich experience and expertise in floodlighting Golf Courses around the world ensured we delivered an effective lighting solution.”
