Abacus lights the range at historic Dromoland Castle Golf & Country Club
Set in a 400-acre woodland estate, Dromoland Castle Golf and Country Club already boasts a championship course designed and developed in 2003 by golf course architect Ron Kirby, Jack Nicklaus, principle designer and the late Joe Carr, earning the Course a reputation equaling that of Adare and Mount Juliet and the quality of the greens and tees is compared very favourably to the very best worldwide.
Dromoland has now added a golf academy to its impressive list of facilities, and have commissioned the legendary Ron Kirby to add his unique design to the project.
A stone clad, slate roofed structure houses the 9 floodlit driving range bays and an additional fully enclosed teaching bay. The design of the range includes four bunkered target greens ranging between 100 and 250 metres with a total range length of 300 metres.
Abacus Lighting was chosen to design and supply the lighting scheme for the impressive facility; whilst the installation was overseen by Abacus' Sports Contractor, John Keane Electrical.
Given the size of the ball, and the high speed it travels, high lighting levels are required to ensure adequate visual tracking of the flight of the ball. However, given the environmentally sensitive location of the driving range, control of light pollution would be paramount to ensure the impact upon the night time environment would be minimal.
Achieving the required lighting levels whilst controlling light pollution is a particular design challenge, but one which Abacus’ sports lighting engineers have a wealth of experience in.
To achieve the required design, Abacus put forward a BERM lighting system with additional floodlights installed off the driving bays. The BERM system utilises combination beam floodlights to achieve the requried lighting specification. The floodlights are installed along the length of the range, thereby avoiding the need for high powered floodlights. Consequently, lamp sizes can be reduced to 250W & 400W High Pressure Sodium or 400W & 1KW metal Halide.
Abacus Lighting are a familiar name behind the floodlighting of a number of recent installations including the Royal and Ancient St Andrews Golf Club, Flaxby Golf & Country Club, Maidenhead Golf Centre and Hedge End Golf Driving range at Southampton.
