Kensal Rise Overground Station
Raise and Lower Columns on Rail Platform Extensions.
London, England: March 2015
Kensal Rise is a busy over ground station on the North London Line servicing the inner suburbs of London. With increased usage as the city continues to grow, Kensal Rise is one of many to become a step free station and undergo platform redevelopment.
An expansion of platforms 1 and 2 was required at the busy station to meet the increased use. Larger platforms necessitated additional lighting, speaker systems, CCTV and signage. Abacus was onboard to focus on the lighting solution and was involved from the initial design, working closely with Network Rail and London Underground, furthering an already successful working relationship.
As with many British rail and over ground stations, Abacus’ world renowned Raise and Lower columns were the ideal choice for Kensal Rise with their history in rail dating back over 50 years.
With limited available platform space these proven and reliable columns, available in a heavy duty option, were ideal for the station’s requirements. These strong, heavy duty, Raise and Lower columns safely hold the lighting and any additional head loads to the column. The increased durability and stability of this column option allows for optimal performance of CCTV and speaker systems with decreased vibration and minimum deflection.
This Network Rail approved base-hinged design allows for maintenance to be undertaken safely at ground level, removing the costs and risks involved with the hire of plant equipment and personnel working at heights. These columns can be lowered in minutes using a counterbalance and just one person, resulting in minimal downtime. The versatility of these columns enables controlled and effective maintenance, an ideal solution given the limited space on a busy platform.
