Crewe & Nantwich RUFC, formed in the 1920’s, today boasts four senior sides with teams in the Mini and Junior section from U7s to U18s. With the 1st XV team now playing in the Midlands 1 West Division, the training pitch needed to be at the right standard. As an RFU approved floodlighting contractor, Abacus was brought on board to upgrade the floodlighting on the training pitch.
Eight high-performance Abacus Challenger 1 sports floodlights were installed around the training pitch to meet the 100 lux level required for this level of play. The Challenger 1 was the ideal choice as the floodlights internal baffle reduces direct glare and re-directs upward stray light back to the floodlight beam, thus increasing the efficiency of the lamp. This gives improves visibility on the pitch for the players and helps to reduce dazzle when looking upwards for throws and catches. Toughened front glass along with a die cast aluminium body protects the lamp and electrical components from stray rugby balls and the rigours of the British weather.
Annual maintenance is important for the running of the rugby club, so to avoid downtime and rule out cancelled training or matches due to poor or failing lighting, Abacus base-hinged Raise and Lower masts were used. The mast and headframe can be lowered, safely and efficiently bringing the lighting system to a position where maintenance can be carried out at ground level without the need for cherry pickers or other expensive equipment.
With club members commenting on the huge difference the new floodlighting has made, Crewe & Nantwich RUFC are now able to train and play, making the most of their grounds all year round.
