Located on the south coast, Southampton Port is one of the UK’s leading ports and home to the UK’s second largest container terminal. With a large amount of traffic coming through the port, a lighting system that worked around port operations and offered effective, secure and efficient lighting was required. Continuing to build on the positive working relationship and past project successes with Associated British Ports (ABP), Abacus put together an LED lighting solution to meet the high use and energy requirements of the port.
As Southampton Port is one of the busiest ports in the UK, the lighting needed to be reliable and energy efficient due to 24 hour operation. Energy saving LED lighting was the ideal solution to cover all areas required on the 12 acre plot and tail compound, with a mixture of AAA-LUX AL-Series floodlights being used at 30m high and Apollo LED lanterns used at 10m high.
The AL-Series is designed specifically for large area lighting and has already been installed in port settings such as the Port of Rotterdam. These high performance LED fittings effectively distribute light across large areas, with highly efficient optics reducing wasted light and glare. Glare reduction on a port site is vital as employees operating heavy duty equipment, often lifting large containers, require visual clarity at all times for safe operation. This high powered 1.5kW luminaire can be mounted at greater heights, such as on the Abacus 30m Raise and Lower Winch (RLW) mast, and achieve full lighting potential.
The AL-Series excellent light control means that the number of masts and lighting points required on site is reduced, further adding to the energy saving capabilities obtained through switching and dimming. Add to this, the ability to control the system via wireless methods resulting in minimal cabling thus reducing installation time and electrical gear inside the mast.
The use of RLW masts at Southampton is ideal for ABP as the headframe, lighting and maintenance are all contained in close quarters to the mast, keeping any equipment out of walkways or work roads. Maintenance of floodlighting with this mast takes a short period of time, reducing downtime and enabling port operations to continue to run to schedule.
To complement the use of the Al-Series and avoid issues with HV cables, LED Apollo lanterns were also installed, this time at a lower mounting height of 10m. This lower mounting height required a less powerful lantern as a more efficient light source being closer to the ground. The Apollo is still a reliable and powerful LED fitting which can be used in port environments, as evidenced with the Apollo having been installed on ABP site, the Port of Cardiff.
Durable and proven Abacus Raise and Lower masts were used with the Apollo fittings in areas with more ground space to work with. These base-hinged masts increase the level of safety during installation and maintenance, as the mast can be put together at ground height and light fittings can be lowered to ground level for maintenance purposes. This type of mast requires a little more room to be lowered than the RLW mast, however these can be installed to lower in a particular area reducing the likelihood of interfering with operations.
This low height maintenance is quick and easy, keeping downtime to a minimum and avoiding the use and cost of expensive equipment hire and the risks associated with working at height.
Working alongside contractors Aggregate Industries and ABP, Abacus’ lighting solution has enabled those working in thie 12 acre area and tail compound at Southampton port to continue to do so safely under reliable and controllable LED lighting.
