Abacus helps Chelsea’s Training Ground shine bright
Abacus Lighting has completed a contract to manufacture and install external lighting at the new multi million pound Chelsea Training Ground in Cobham, Surrey
The state-of-the-art training headquarters is one of the largest and most ambitious investments in first team, academy and community football ever undertaken by a football club. Built in close consultation with Elmbridge Borough Council to meet the green belt requirements of the local landscape, the campus-style ground provides an inspirational atmosphere for aspiring first teamers. The complex includes several natural turf pitches, a new 3G synthetic training pitch and a modern main building which features the latest in training, rehabilitation, medical, pitch and media technology.
Abacus tackled stiff competition to secure the contract, helped by previous successful installations at training grounds including Arsenal; Everton and Ipswich Town. To meet stringent planning restrictions, Abacus installed their range of Challenger®
floodlights throughout the complex.
The Challenger® range of sports lighting offers a specific light control system consisting of a series of complementary measures to effectively control obtrusive light. Precision reflector systems ensure tight beam control, reducing overspill and directing light only where it is needed - on the pitch.
Abacus’ Key Account Executive, James Brunt, commented: "This is one of the most prestigious projects that Abacus has been involved with and it’s pleasing to know that we are helping develop future premiership stars and home grown talent, who may eventually represent their national teams."
Appointed by the project’s main contractors, White Horse Contractors of Abingdon, Abacus was tasked with the design criteria of providing 500 lux floodlighting for the natural turf match pitch and 300 lux for the 3G artificial grass pitch. Lighting was also required for the pathway leading to both pitches and also the goal keeping training area. 70 Challenger® 1 floodlights were installed, ensuring zero upward light, minimal overspill and greatly reduced glare. To ensure ease and safety of maintenance, Abacus’ based hinged masts were installed to a maximum of 14m. The masts can be easily lowered to ground level using a hydraulic counterbalance, thus improving health and safety during installation and maintenance.
James added: "The manufacture and complete turnkey installation was carried out in just 8 weeks - quite an achievement considering the wet winter weather we’ve had to cope with!"
Chelsea’s joint consultants, Surfacing Standards and Turftrax were assisted by Abacus for the initial design of the floodlighting earlier this year.Surfacing Standards Director, Steve Wilcockson, commented: "Over the past few years we have worked with Abacus on numerous lighting projects and found the service and delivery second to none.
Chelsea FC demanded the best lighting available and Abacus certainly did not fail to meet their expectations with the new Challenger®
lamps and flat glass technology."
To complement the turnkey sports lighting package, Abacus has also secured a ten year maintenance contract at the training ground to include cleaning; floodlight alignment check and inspection of masts on a biannual basis.
All foundations and cable trenching was carried out by White Horse Contractors of Abingdon.
