Standards for lighting a hockey field are governed by a range of national and international bodies, depending on the level of play planned for the club.

Training and two levels of competition matches are governed in Europe by both national hockey associations and a European standard EN 12193:2007, which stipulates a minimum lighting level for each class. EN 12193:2007 recommends minimum levels of 200 lux, 300 lux and 500 lux for Classes III, II and I. National Associations and the FIH also identify other levels, typically 350 lux.

Switchdown levels are an often requested feature, allowing a hockey field to be lit as 3 independent areas. Abacus can provide this feature to ensure maximum energy efficiency.
