Port lighting at Callao Port

Container port lighting, effective and safe to maintain.

Callao, Peru: August 2014

Located 15km from Lima, Callao Port in Peru is a multi-purpose APM Terminal, handling a range of containerised and general cargo around the clock. Being the largest port on the west coast of South America, Callao Port is a high volume terminal acting as a gateway to Peru, the fourth largest economy in South America.

APM Terminals chose to invest $307 million in expanding Callao Port to meet the growing demands and increases in traffic. The port covers a land area of nearly 50 hectares, home to eight docks and 18 docking facilities. To sufficiently and securely light the area, Abacus installed 225 Rhea 1 kW floodlights which are IP66 rated making them ideal for the port environment. The Rhea floodlight is a compact and lightweight fitting which is effective at lighting large areas and has been successfully installed at similar sites such as Hidd Port, Bahrain. The AL5210 Rhea floodlight is an ideal choice for lighting an area subjected to harsh conditions due to the high pressure die-cast aluminium body and toughened front glass protecting the lantern life. As the port operates 24/7, the lighting had to be reliable and safe for those operating within the port.

The Rhea floodlight also features an integral baffle ensuring increased lantern performance, with 45° downwards lighting reducing upwards light output and giving excellent glare limitation for those operating vehicles and machinery in the area.

Safety is a critical factor in port operations; this includes the installation and maintenance of equipment on site. In order to ensure the safe implementation of the lighting solution, the Rhea floodlights were mounted on nine 50m GL800 masts and three 40m GL800 masts. The GL800 high masts are base-hinged for an increased level of safety during installation and maintenance. The lowering capability of this mast enables maintenance to take place at ground level avoiding the use and cost of expensive equipment and risks of working at height.

The combination of the Rhea floodlights and the GL800 base-hinged grand range masts provided APM Terminals and Callao Port with excellent lighting levels across the additional container areas and resulted in a lighting system that is both safe & simple to maintain in the future.
