In 2002, Abacus Lighting was awarded accreditation as an IS014001 registered company, reflecting its commitment to protecting the environment. The ISO14001 standard specifies requirements for establishing an environmental policy and a management system to minimise the impact the company’s operations has on the environment.
With effect from July 2006, RoHS makes manufacturers responsible for eliminating specified hazardous or toxic substances being used in manufactured products such as lead, mercury, cadmium and polybrominated biphenyls. A full list is contained in the directive. Abacus complies fully with the requirements of RoHS.
Effective in the U.K. from July 2007, the WEEE Regulations have been implemented to reduce the wasteful disposal of electrical and electronic equipment into landfill or incineration; and place responsibility on the producer (or agent) to finance the collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.
The Lighting Industry Federation have established Lumicom, a not for profit company to manage the infrastructure of end of life luminaires for participating manufacturers. Funded by a recycling cost payable to Lumicom by the member companies.
