About Our Client
Barton-under-Needwood Rugby Union FC is a small village rugby team formed over 30 years ago. Since its formation, they continue to grow and currently hosts senior teams, veterans and juniors from their site in Barton. Their ethos is very much around providing sport for the local community, and they play an integral part in supporting local businesses and schools.
Challenge
The rugby club boosts a large pitch with a growing number of club members and ambitions to attract more. They have a desire to help the community get active and keep active. The club has recently expanded and needed more and better floodlit space to enable everyone to train safely at the club more regularly. With just two very small low-level floodlights, it required further floodlit space to help engage more people and reach their growth plans.
After successfully raising funds needed via crowdfunding, Abacus Lighting was invited to survey the pitch and provide recommendations on achieving desired light levels. Taking on board an understanding of the club’s desire to increase the floodlit areas to enable the club to rotate use, protect the grass surface and prevent cancellations of games.

The Abacus Lighting design team put forward a solution to achieve 200Lux with 0.6 uniformity across the pitch using our latest Challenger 1 LED floodlights.
The Abacus Lighting Challenger 1 gives excellent light control and reduces light overspill, upward lighting and glare. The Challenger 1 LED also effectively controls light pollution for the club.
The rugby club’s pitch now benefits from long-lasting, robust lighting to illuminate its pitch to cater for the demands of the club’s membership and the wider community.
Using LED luminaires, the club will benefit from their long lifespan, energy efficiency, ability to operate in cold conditions with instant lighting, and ability to withstand frequent switching on and off – ideal for the multi-use Barton Under Needwood rugby has planned for the club.
By installing LED floodlights using our HL250-based hinged masts, the club is in line for minimum maintenance and will benefit from the sturdy design and durable engineering with the ability to cope with high winds and stormy weather.
