Case study: Briton Ferry Llansawel AFC

Challenge:

Briton Ferry Llansawel AFC is a football club based in Wales, who are currently playing in the Cymru South.

Following successes on the field, the club were awarded a grant towards the required stadium upgrades so they could meet the ground grading requirements of the FAW. This included increasing the current floodlight system from a 350-lux system to a 500 lux, whilst retaining as much of the existing infrastructure as possible.

Solution:

  • 24 x 1.5kW Challenger 1 LED floodlights
  • FAW tier 1 specification:
    • Average maintained illuminance of 500 lux with a uniformity of 0.7

The Abacus lighting design team were able to put forward a scheme proposing of 24 1.5kW Challenger 1 LED floodlights to meet the specification, then it was over to the mechanical design department to carry out the relevant on-site checks to ensure the masts were structurally safe to carry the LED floodlights (in line with ILP Guidance Note 6: Retrofitting LED luminaires on existing lighting columns). The calculations were completed, signed off, and then issued to the customer and then it was full steam ahead with progressing with the works in time to meet their tight deadlines given the busy schedule.

The club is now able to utilize their upgraded lighting system, which is now fully operational and compliant with all FAW guidelines.
