Case Study: QPR Football Club

Challenge:

The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium is home to Championship football team Queen’s Park Rangers (QPR).

Founded in 1892, the club have had numerous successes throughout the years, and are currently going from strength to strength.

The club already had an existing lighting system in place, consisting of 4 x 40m static masts, carrying 20 x 2kW floodlights. However, this had become outdated, and did not meet the Championship requirements set by the FA of 800 lux.

After going out to tender, the project was awarded to Abacus Lighting. This consisted of the removal of the existing floodlights and replacing with new fittings which complied with Championship requirements

Solution:

  • 72 x Challenger 3 floodlights

Removal of the existing floodlights was conducted via rope access, and replaced with Abacus Challenger 3 floodlights. The decision to not go with LED floodlights was due to the existing masts being 40 years old, which introduced weight restrictions when looking at LED floodlight options.

Working at height with specialist contractors proved a challenge, but the new system was installed successfully. The new floodlighting system achieved 1000 lux with 18 new 2kW floodlights per mast, therefore exceeding the Championship requirements.

An 88-point lux check was conducted to confirm we met the standards, the outcome of this being that the overall solution exceeded the brief. This in turn will save the club around 10kW in power, and achieve improved levels of uniformity which helps the players, broadcasters and spectators.

QPR are currently flying high in the Championship league. We look forward to a successful long-term relationship with the club as they push for a promotion, where a LED 1650 lux system will be required and involve a full turnkey new installation.
