Case Study: Streetly Lawn Tennis Club

ABOUT OUR CLIENT

Streetly Lawn Tennis Club is a prestigious tennis club located in the heart of Streetly, West Midlands, UK. Founded in 1922, the club has a long and proud history of providing high-quality tennis facilities and coaching to its members. The club boasts 10 well-maintained all-weather artificial grass courts, 9 of which are floodlit, making it one of the premier tennis clubs in the region.

The club offers a wide range of tennis activities for all ages and abilities, from social tennis to competitive play. The coaching team, led by a fully qualified LTA coach, provides individual and group coaching sessions for juniors and adults. The club also hosts regular tournaments and social events, including the popular annual Club Championships.

THE CHALLENGE

After successfully raising funds needed via crowdfunding, Abacus Lighting was invited to survey the pitch and provide recommendations on achieving desired light levels. Taking on board an understanding of the club’s desire to increase the floodlit areas to enable the club to rotate use, protect the grass surface and prevent cancellations of games.

THE SOLUTION

  • 52 x Challenger 1 LED floodlights

Abacus replaced the existing 52 1kW HID fittings with Challenger 1 LED, ranging from 500 – 800w and using a combination of 2 and 4 mod Challengers. The works were split over two phases due to the clubs busy summer schedule.

The clubs existing columns were manufactured by Abacus over 20 years ago, so prior to work commencing the columns were inspected for any deterioration, and the relevant structural calculations were completed to ensure compliance with ILP guidance notes.

The new LED lighting improves the quality of light on the tennis courts, providing better visibility for players. Additionally, making the switch to LED is not only cost effective, but the luminaires also have a longer lifespan, reducing maintenance costs and improving sustainability.
