London Docklands Light Railway Extension, UK

Since opening in 1987, it’s been extended many times; and during the 2012 Olympics, it will be a key mode of transport, linking Olympic Park with other venues. As part of the preparations, all stations on the network are being lengthened to accommodate an extra carriage; and Abacus is supplying around 140 4m painted base-hinged lighting columns and brackets to feature on all station platforms. We’ll also be training the column-operators in correct maintenance procedures.

Base-hinged columns are ideal for railway platform lighting, as fittings can be quickly and safely lowered to ground level, eliminating the health and safety risks of working at height.

The Abacus base-hinged column has been the market leader since 1962, when it was first developed specifically for the railway industry. Since then it has been installed on nearly all rail platforms across the UK.
